On 21 May 2017, the International Clinical Trials Day will mark the 270th anniversary since the first ever clinical trial: during captain James Cook's first voyage, the expedition's physician Dr James Lind used lemons and sauerkraut against scurvy. This occasion meets us with Dr Borislav Borisov, manager of Medical Centre Synexus. The British company is a world leader in clinical trials and has been in Bulgaria since 2007. In 2015, it also opened a centre in the country.

Why did Synexus chose Bulgaria?

In Synexus we work for the medicine that will be a fact 5-10 years in the future: new types of therapies and healing approaches, personalised medicine. Thanks to the high quality of Bulgarian physicians, Bulgaria is 25th in the world in the field of medical research and clinical trials.

In what diseases do you specialise?

We work in two main groups: mass diseases (cardiovascular ones, diabetes, osteoporosis, rheumatology) and rarer indications in neurology, dermatology, rheumatology, where often this is the only therapeutic alternative available for the patient.

What are the advantages of participating in a clinical trial for the patient?

Participation provides to the patient access to a wide spectrum of free tests and consultations, and to expensive therapies. Safety is guaranteed by the highest international standards that we follow, and by the regular external and internal audits of our work.
