The massacre, propagated to the Western world by an Irish-American journalist, Januarius MacGahan, helped focus public and political attitudes on the "Eastern Question." Currently, it is one of the very strong taboos in Bulgaria's history, and even trying to discuss it will probably not be tolerated.
