WHERE IN BULGARIA ARE YOU?

There are many explanations why this village came to be on the steep bank of the Kanina River, protected by the high ridges of the Western Rhodope and facing the even higher peaks of the Pirin.

Some theories claim that the first settlers came from Tarnovo in northern Bulgaria, fleeing a plague. They tried to make their new home a replica of the mediaeval Bulgarian capital, which accounts for the large stone houses connected by underground tunnels that may be up to several hundred yards long.

For you, however, there is only one reason to get into your car, head for Gotse Delchev and continue into the Rhodope. This village, which has been the set for dozens of Bulgarian feature films, looks like its former inhabitants have just left – and has not a single new construction to spoil the enjoyable atmosphere.
