WHERE IN BULGARIA ARE YOU? © Anthony Georgieff

One of the most isolated communities of Bulgarian Muslims, or Pomaks, preserves a tradition of painting brides' faces white and decorating them with shiny spangles. It is a tradition that has no parallels in Bulgaria and possibly in Europe, and as such has drawn some media attention in recent years.

Weddings here are an elaborate affair. They last for at least three days and usually take place in wintertime. The bridegroom's parents have to provide housing for the newly-weds while the brides' family provide the trousseau – including furniture and kitchen utensils that are usually displayed in the yard for all villagers to see.

And of course on the wedding day there is a huge circle dance, or horo, in the village square.

Where in Bulgaria are you?
